What is a contract government job?

Many government departments, hospitals, universities and research institutes fill posts on a contract (samvida) basis for a fixed period, usually one year or the length of a project, often with renewal if the work continues. The pay is a fixed monthly amount instead of a regular pay scale, and the post does not give the pension or permanent status of a regular government job.

Common contract posts

• Health: staff nurse, community health officer, pharmacist, lab technician and data entry operator under the National Health Mission and state health societies.
• Education: contract PGT and TGT teachers in Navodaya and Kendriya Vidyalayas, guest faculty and guest lecturers.
• Research: project assistant, project associate, junior and senior research fellow posts in IITs, AIIMS, CSIR labs and universities.
• Offices: data entry operator, computer operator, accountant and consultant posts in departments and PSUs.
• Apprenticeships: paid training with a monthly stipend in banks, PSUs and railways.

How to stay safe

• Apply only through the official website of the department or institute. Every job on this page links to its official notification.
• Real government recruiters never ask for money for a job. If a private agency asks for a "registration" or "security" fee, it is a fraud.
• Walk-in interviews have a fixed date and time: carry your original certificates, photocopies and photographs as listed in the notice.

Frequently asked questions

Can a contract job become permanent?

Not automatically. A contract post ends when its period ends. Some states give extra marks or age relaxation to contract staff in later regular recruitments; the regular notification says if this applies.

Is experience in a contract job useful?

Yes. Many regular government notifications accept experience gained in contract posts, and it helps for higher contract posts too.

Do contract jobs have an age limit and reservation?

Usually yes. Each notification states the age limit and whether reservation applies. Walk-in and project posts often have simpler eligibility and faster selection.
